We stopped in at Port Gregory on the way at the Pink Lake. Esperance also has a pink lake that we visited many times and never found it pink so we weren't sure what to expect at Port Gregory. The pictures in the brochures were amazing so we were hopeful.
We were about 4kms away when we started noticing that the clouds were pink so we all started getting excited. We rounded the corner and this is what the saw...
We were all so excited to see the lake so pink, its really quite strange. There are high levels of Beta Carotene in the salt crystals and that's what makes the lake pink. Down at the waters edge it was very crusty and you can pick up the pink pieces.
We arrived at Kalbarri just before lunch time. We are staying at Tudor Holiday Village its quite a big park with lots of tents in it at the moment. This is by far the busiest nosiest park we have stayed in so far. The kids had a great swim in the pool this afternoon, they assured me that the water is really warm.
There were some markets setup down on the waterfront we noticed on the way in so after setup and lunch we headed down to check them out, they were packing up by the time we got there but by the looks of what we saw we didn't miss too much.
Kids have been such book worms and read all their books they brought from home plus the ones that Santa gave them so we hit the second hand book store to replenish their supplies.
Went for a little drive around to get orientated. Drove past Red Bluff Beach and Jakes Point. Dave is still ever hopeful for a surf but sadly the wind that blew all night at Geraldton has followed us here and therefore it just wasn't happening again this afternoon. He is ever hopeful for an early surf tomorrow morning....
There are lots of things to see and do in Kalbarri and we are looking forward to getting stuck into them tomorrow. As we are here a day earlier than planned we can hopefully do them at a slightly slower pace as the kids are getting very tired.
Did a spot of shopping this afternoon and the prices of things are noticeably more up here. The kids have been eating so many apples its been difficult to keep enough in the van for them. Think they may need to find something else for a while though cause a crusty looking granny smith apple up here costs over $8 per kilo.
Tonight we had pizza for dinner - check it out, looks pretty good for camp pizza. Its really amazing what I can now cook on 4 hot plates and a griller.
