Anyone for fried bugs....

WOW what a day!!!

First stop - Skatepark at Renmark for 3rd stop on the skate across Australia tour and then on the road heading to Port Augusta.  Not a huge days driving but lots of little towns to drive through.

Driving down the road and we pass a shoe tree, next to the shoe tree was the hat tree and then the undies tree.  A little further down the highway was a tree called Grub tree which was covered in dirty t-shirts.

Nearly got hit by a road train taking this photo..

We passed through a small town with a population of 70 - hard to believe these sorts of towns still exist.

Just after Jamestown there is a massive windfarm.  With the window wound down to take photos as we drove past we began driving through a small plague of locusts.  The small plague quickly turned into a several very large plagues of locusts.  It was like driving through a hail storm, the car was peppered with the bugs and the front windscreen was splattered with their guts - so gross!!!  You could see the bugs all over the road and the sound of them hitting underneath the car was like the sound of driving on a gravel road.

We pulled over to change drivers and checked out the car...

All of a sudden there was a horrible burning smell.  I stopped the car and we popped the bonnet, bent  down and checked out under the car - anyone for fried bugs.

Dave found a stick and flicked some of them out - at least enough to get rid of the smell and get the car going again.

With me at the wheel Dave had to navigatee - this would be a whole lot easier if he were to take his reading glasses into the car.  Dave can't read with out his glasses and tries to read the maps using the binoculars upside down - not very successful!!

I had been studying the maps all day and was fairly familiar with the path we were taking, the GPS and Dave had me try and follow the wrong path.  Dave got cranky at me when I insisted we had to go a different way - it was at this point he realised that this trip is not about point a to point b its about the travelling in between.  Its not about the places we're staying rather the experiences in between.  Can I just also point out that I was right and he was wrong!

Our lunch stop Booleroo Centre - the picture below is the main street...

The drive down Horrocks Pass was windy but very scenic.  From a passengers perspective it was quite enjoyable.

As we were arriving into Port Augusta we saw the storm trouper below.  This guy has been walking the Nullarbour dressed as a storm trouper.  He began in Perth and is walking all the way to Sydney, he expects to be there in February next year.  He is raising money for the Starlight foundation.

Found our caravan park - we are staying at Shoreline Tourist Park and have a waterfront site.  The park is pretty basic and has no grass and is a little out of town.  The gates shut at 9:30pm and after that your locked in until morning!  There is a pool - the water was freezing!!

Kids checked out the local skatepark for stop 4 on the skate across Australia tour - the park was pretty busy so we will be back for more stunts tomorrow.  Jade describes this park as AWESOME!!
